The Use of Models in Architecture

Architectural models are used by architects for a range of purposes and incorporate great means to presenting designs to clients.

Ad Hoc models and sketch models are made to study the interaction of volumes, different viewpoints, and concepts during the design process. These models may also be used to explain a complicated or unusual design for builders to understand the functions behind the design.

Ad Hoc models also provide a great means for designers and consultants to discuss designs with engineers and town planners.

When using models in architectural presentations, the models can be used to exhibit and sell a final design. These models are also used as showpieces to feature the design of a building and even as part of a museum exhibition which is known as scale replicas of the historic building.

Exterior Models

Exterior models are models of the building, which usually include landscape elements of civic spaces around the building which is being designed.

Interior Models

Interior models are widely used to showcase interior design space, planning, finishes, colours, furniture, beautification and the basic functions and elements which will be incorporated into the interior of a building.

Landscaping Design Models

Landscaping design models are models based on landscape designs and development representing features such as walkways, small bridges, vegetation patterns and pergolas. These models usually represent public spaces and may include buildings as well.

Urban Models

Urban models are mostly built on a much smaller scale than usual scale models. The scale sizes range from 1:500 up to 1:20 000. These scales can represent several city blocks and even a whole town, village, campus, resort, or industrial facility.
